Experiments in Independence
It always warms my heart to discover programs that support the development of independence in young children. Every time a child learns to do something on her own - to brush her teeth or tie her shoes or slice a banana - the child experiences a deep inner satisfaction. That inner feeling inspires a desire to learn more and it builds resilience to keep trying in the face of challenges.
One such program is called Let Grow, currently being piloted in some New York elementary schools. I invite you to enjoy this short NPR piece on Let Grow.
